Fees & buyer protection

What you pay on ByteBack, and how the buyer protection fee works.

What buyers pay

For a purchase (Buy now or an accepted offer):

  • The item price — or, for an accepted counter-offer, exactly the agreed amount.
  • Delivery, at the price the seller sets (nothing for collection in person).
  • A 3.5% buyer protection fee on the item price, shown at checkout before you pay.

For a trade:

  • Straight swaps have no payment and no fee.
  • If cash is included, whoever adds the cash pays it plus a 3.5% fee on the cash amount, through checkout.
  • There’s no delivery charge on a trade: each of you sends (or hands over) your own item at your own cost.

Payment is taken through Stripe’s hosted checkout. ByteBack never sees your card number.

Worked example

Example of a purchase with delivery
Item price£100.00
Delivery (set by seller)£4.95
Buyer protection fee (3.5% of item price)£3.50
Buyer pays in total£108.45

In this example the seller’s payout is £104.95 — the item price plus their delivery charge, transferred in full to their Stripe payout account. ByteBack doesn’t deduct a seller commission.

What sellers pay

  • Listing on ByteBack is free and ByteBack takes no commission on a sale.
  • You set your own delivery price and keep it.
  • You must set up payouts with Stripe before buyers can pay for your items. Your payout is the full item price plus your delivery charge (or the full trade cash you receive).

What buyer protection covers

The fee pays for the ByteBack-run parts of the process, not for a guarantee or insurance. In practice, it means:

  • The seller is paid only after you confirm the item arrived, or automatically 14 days after it’s marked sent (3 days for collection) if no problem is reported.
  • If something is wrong, you can report it from the order page and ByteBack support reviews it with both parties. If the seller hasn’t been paid yet, their payout waits while the problem is open. Once a payout has been sent it can’t simply be held; support reviews those cases individually.
  • Before dispatch, you can request a cancellation, and the seller can cancel with a full refund.

ByteBack doesn’t authenticate items and doesn’t insure shipments. See the Terms for the full picture.

Refunds

Refunds go back to the original payment method through Stripe; timing depends on Stripe and your card issuer.

  • If an order is cancelled before it’s sent (by the seller, or after the seller accepts your cancellation request), you’re refunded everything you paid: item, delivery and the buyer protection fee.
  • If a payment arrives after a checkout was cancelled or the item went to someone else, it’s refunded in full automatically.
  • When a reported problem is resolved with a partial refund, support decides the amount case by case; partial refunds reduce the seller’s payout by the same amount.
