About ByteBack

ByteBack is an online marketplace where members list and buy classic electronics. [Registered company name] (“ByteBack”, “we”) provides the platform. Items are sold by other members, not by ByteBack, and the contract for each sale is between the buyer and the seller.

These terms describe how the service works today. They are a draft and will be updated before launch.

Accounts

You create an account with an email address and password and choose a public username. You are responsible for keeping your password safe and for what happens under your account. Give accurate information and keep it up to date.

Your username, and the listings and reviews you post, are visible to other members.

Listings and photos

When you list an item, you must own it or be authorised to sell it, describe it honestly (including its condition, faults and missing parts) and use photos of the actual item. Listings and photos are stored with our database and storage provider, Supabase.

We may remove listings or restrict accounts that break these terms or that we reasonably believe are misleading, unlawful or unsafe.

Buying and payment

Payments are processed by Stripe through its hosted checkout. ByteBack never sees or stores your card number. At checkout you pay the item price, the seller’s delivery price (if any) and the buyer protection fee. See Fees & buyer protection.

An item is reserved for you only while your checkout is open. If it isn’t paid in time, the checkout expires and the item may be bought by someone else.

Offers and trades

  • A seller has 72 hours to respond to an offer. An accepted offer must be checked out within 48 hours.
  • Accepting an offer is not a purchase. The first person to pay for the item gets it.
  • A trade can be a straight swap or a swap with cash. Both members send their item. Any cash is paid through checkout. The item offered in a trade is described by the member offering it; ByteBack does not verify it.

Delivery and completion

Sellers set their own delivery price and send the item (or hand it over, for collection) after payment. Buyers should confirm when the item arrives.

  • The seller is paid after the buyer confirms the item arrived.
  • If no problem is reported, the order completes automatically 14 days after the item is marked as sent (3 days for collection) and the seller is paid.
  • Sellers must set up payouts with Stripe before buyers can pay for their items.

Cancellations, refunds and problems

  • Before the item is dispatched, the buyer can request a cancellation, and the seller can cancel with a full refund.
  • If something goes wrong, report it from the order page and ByteBack support reviews it with both parties. A seller’s payout that hasn’t been sent yet waits while a problem is open; payouts already sent are reviewed case by case.
  • Refunds are returned to the original payment method through Stripe. Timing depends on Stripe and the card issuer.
  • Card disputes raised with a bank are handled through Stripe and may pause or reverse a payout.

ByteBack support can decide to refund, cancel or complete an order where a problem has been reported. We make these decisions in good faith but don’t promise a particular outcome.

Member conduct

Don’t use ByteBack to defraud others, list items you can’t lawfully sell, harass other members, interfere with the service or try to take payment outside ByteBack to avoid fees. Be honest in messages, offers and reviews.

Our responsibility

ByteBack is a platform. We don’t inspect, authenticate or take possession of items, and we don’t guarantee that a listing is accurate or that a member will perform. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have by law that cannot be limited. [Limitation of liability wording to be confirmed.]

Changes, contact and governing law

We may update these terms as the service develops and will show the date of the latest version on this page.
